Agricultural practice and bats: A review of current research literature and management recommendations - BD2005

Description
The study will collate scientific and agri-environment scheme literature focusing on:
- bats in agricultural areas
- aerial insects and changes in their abundance and diversity with habitat management on agricultural land
- the impact of agricultural change on insectivorous bird species that have feeding or habitat requirements in common with bats

From this information we will summarise trends and conclusions in order to compile a draft leaflet for farm managers and conservation advisors containing management recommendations that would benefit bats. Where information to support management recommendations is lacking we will identify areas where further research is required.

This work complements the England Biodiversity Strategy Programme of Action (1-3 years) Agriculture Workstream to protect habitats isolated within agricultural landscapes.
Objective
Please refer to Section 12 (a) for the targets and timetable.
1. Collate scientific and agri-environment scheme literature focusing on:
1.1 Bats in agricultural areas
1.2 Aerial insects and changes in their abundance and diversity with habitat management on agricultural land
1.3 Impact of agricultural change on insectivorous bird species that have feeding or habitat requirements in common with bats
2. Summarise trends and conclusions, identifying potential alterations to present:
2.1 Management recommendations that would benefit bats and produce a draft leaflet for farm managers
2.2 Areas where further research is required.
