Secretary of State Zoo Inspectors' Performance - WC05001

To assess the performance of Secretary of State Zoo Inspectors in how they carry out zoo inspections in accordance with the Zoo Licensing Act 1981.This is necessary because, at present, there is no way to assess their performance. Thorough checks are undertaken before they are appointed to ensure they are competent, but a system needs to be in place to ensure their competency and suitability is maintained, and that the quality of the service they provide is broadly consistent across the whole Inspectorate. Anecdotal evidence from an increasing number of zoos suggests that some inspectors are assessing zoos against their own standards rather than the Government Standards. The research will determine what needs to be covered in any appraisal system, how it should be carried out, by whom, who will have an input and on what regularity it will be undertaken.
