Web-integrated framework for addressing uncertainty and variability in pesticide risk assessment - PS2301

Description
The objectives of this project are:
1. To review, evaluate and recommend the most appropriate existing mathematical/statistical approaches to addressing uncertainty and variability.
2. To develop and evaluate a generic model framework that incorporates uncertainty and variability into the assessment of pesticide risks to nontarget species.
3. To develop fully web-integrated software, by web-enabling the generic framework and a suite of specific models. The mathematical models and their supporting data will be provided by other projects addressing risks to different taxonomic groups (aquatic organisms, terrestrial vertebrates and invertebrates).
4. To establish a Coordinating Committee and effective means of electronic communication to ensure efficient interaction and exchange of results between this project and the other projects which will provide
the specific models and data for web-enabling.
This approach will enable all the models to be web-enabled to a consistently high quality, and provide a fully harmonised interface for end-users. It will be much more effective than a collection of models brought
together after being web-enabled in separate projects. We propose to use the Microsoft .Net. programming platform, commonly referred to as “DotNet”,. This currently defines the state of the art in programming
platforms and offers unparalleled control, power, and flexibility in the development of web applications. Other platforms could be used if required by DEFRA.
The results of this research will be used in the statutory pesticides approvals scheme and will contribute directly to the Government's objectives of assessing and minimising the risks that pesticides present to the
environment and non-target species.
Objective
Objective 1. Review, evaluate and recommend the most appropriate existing mathematical/statistical approaches to addressing uncertainty and variability. Completion of final version by end of month 23

Objective 2. Develop and evaluate a generic model framework that incorporates uncertainty and variability into the assessment of pesticide risks to nontarget species. Completion of final version by end of month 23

Objective 3. Develop fully web-integrated software, by web-enabling the generic framework and a suite of specific models (algorithms and data for the latter being provided by the key module projects). The software
will be freely accessible via a browser interface with options to provide varying levels of access to different stakeholders. Completion of final version by end of month 48 (First working prototype ready
for evaluation by month 14).

Objective 4. Establish a Coordinating Committee and effective means of electronic communication to ensure efficient interaction and exchange of results between this project and the key module projects which will
provide the specific models and data for web-enabling in objective 3. Ongoing throughout project (Committee and communication methods established by end of month 3)
