Information Needed to Decide with Confidence on the Long Term Management Options for Long Lived Radioactive Waste - RS01003

Description
This research project was let to Wilkinson Environmental Consulting Ltd by the then Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (now Defra).

As there is currently insufficient knowledge available to decide whether radioactive waste should be disposed of or be subjected to long-term storage, this study aimed to identify the broad topic areas where more knowledge is required, and the level of knowledge required before such a decision can be taken. The results will be used in formulating subsequent more detailed studies.

The project ran in parallel with the consultation by Defra and the Devolved Administrations on " Managing Radioactive Waste Safely" and was completed in January 2003. The project was overseen by a Steering Group, chaired by Defra's Radioactive Substances (RAS) Division and included representatives from a wide range of interested parties.
