Environmental benchmarks - arable - ES0112

Description
The main objective is to quantify the current and possible future environmental burdens of arable crop production systems, as well as the crop outputs, in the different farming systems and regions throughout England and Wales.
The policy need is to support and evaluate sustainability, including profit. It is summed up in the UK Government's Strategy for Sustainable Development's four objectives: (i) social progress which recognises the needs of everyone; (ii) effective protection of the environment; (iii) prudent use of natural resources; (iv) maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment. This project will help quantify aspects of current economic and environmental performance and what changes in practices can be made to improve both. The results will help inform policy makers and the farming industry about where arable agriculture stands now in terms of the environmental burdens and how improvements may be made.

Objective
The main objective is to quantify the current and possible future environmental burdens of arable crop production systems, as well as the crop outputs, in the different farming systems and regions throughout England and Wales.

The individual objectives are to:

1. Define current arable practices in regions of England and Wales (excepting organic systems).
2. Evaluate current practices on a regional basis with the MEASURES framework in terms of burdens, crop outputs and interactions.
3. Define feasible improvements in arable practices.
4. Evaluate future practices with MEASURES framework in terms of burdens, crop outputs and interactions.
