Research into sustainable options for the recycling of agricultural plastics - WA0809

Description
This project will examine and identify technical and economic issues relating to the recycling of agricultural plastics. It will:
1. Review the existing Welsh, Cumbrian and other similar recycling schemes within the UK, including a review of economics.
2. Establish typical levels of contamination of silage plastic and examine the ways in which it becomes contaminated, identifying any cost effective improvements. This will be achieved through pilot work at ADAS Pwellpeiran, and visits to 15 farms participating in recycling schemes in different parts of the country.
3. Subsequently assess the scope for improvements to handling, storage, collection and delivery systems in order to reduce contamination.
4 Make recommendations for cost effective improvements to recycling scheme design.

The results from this work will support DEFRA’s policies to extend Waste Regulation to the agricultural industry and to promote sustainable recycling. It will provide information on the need for future legislation or appropriate support mechanisms.
The work will also benefit the agricultural industry, as it should lead to more widely accessible plastics recycling schemes as well as providing practical information on best practice.
Objective
The project will examine and identify technical and economic issues relating to the recycling of agricultural plastics within several existing UK schemes, specifically the project will:

1 Review the Welsh and Cumbrian Schemes (and other similar schemes within the UK) including economics;

2 Examine contamination of silage plastics and identify any cost effective improvements;

3 Assess the scope for other improvements to handling, storage, collection and delivery systems;

4 Make recommendations for cost effective and sustainable improvements to scheme design.
