Improve classification & identification of food microorgani- sms via an RNA database: maintain the NCFB - FS1202

Investigate the genetic interrelationships of microorganisms of importance in food and related industries to improve their characterisation, identification and detection. Construct comprehensive rRNA sequence data bases to facilitate identification and the development of gene probes for microbial detection and fingerprinting. Maintain the national collection of food bacteria.
1. To develop species specific probes bases on variable regions of 16S and 23S rRNA to facilitate the identification and detection of Lactic acid bacteria and a range of food borne pathogens. 2. To develop specific and intraspecific DNA fingerprinting systems for microbiological typing and monitoring. 3. To develop a comprehensive 16S sequence base for computer based identification. 4. To provide a national and international culture collection service.
