Investigation of persistence of antimicrobial resistance organisms in livestock production - OD2006

Description
Objectives· To assess the relationship between antimicrobial resistance and medication/management practices· To assess the dynamics and persistence of antimicrobial resistant organisms in farm animals and their environment· To develop and evaluate intervention strategies for antimicrobial usage and management/hygiene which will minimise development and persistence of resistant organisms· To investigate organisms which persist after antimicrobial therapy withdrawal and assess the causes of persistence· To produce risk assessment models for persistence of antimicrobial resistance· To produce advisory documents on controlling the development and persistence of antimicrobial research in livestock Policy Relevance/Use of Results· Antimicrobial resistance is a high priority topic and of major significance to human and animal health· Veterinary authorities urgently need well targeted studies to direct future policy in this area
Objective
01 Month 42 Longitudinal studies of persistence of antimicrobial resistance in E.coli and Ent.faecium prg on pig and poultry farms

02 Month 44 Intervention cohort studies on withdrawal of antimicrobials and effect of organic production systems

03 Month 46 Risk assessment modelling to incorporate microbiological data from this study and other related published and available non-published work on persistence of antimicrobial resistance

04 Month 48 Production of advisory documents for pig, poultry and dairy farms on methods of mimising the development and persistence of antimicrobial resistant organisms
